DeSean Jackson is a star maturing before our very eyes. He fell in the draft because of mild character concerns. At times as a rookie, his cocky antics made coaches roll their eyes. But the 23-year-old has been a model team player this offseason. Jackson wants a new contract but isn’t likely to get one this year. Asked about the situation by the Philadelphia Daily News, Jackson said "There has been no progress so far. I'm looking forward to just working with them and hopefully making something happen.

Some believe that Jackson’s absence at a voluntary practice was a soft negotiating tactic, but sources have said Jackson was away for family matters.

If at all possible, the Eagles may want to go ahead and give Jackson his contract now. Not because the receiver is asking nicely, but because he’s only going to be more expensive in the future. Jackson is a dynamic big-play weapon who makes better use of his speed than perhaps any star in the game. He’s made a habit of scoring 50-yard touchdowns, but this isn’t to say he’s not a complete receiver who can hurt teams between the 20’s.

The Eagles have always been good about issuing contracts to their current players (or, if you remember the Terrell Owens saga, NOT issuing contracts). Expect Jackson to get his money when the time is right.
