Bob Glauber of Newsday reports that the Bengals are about to release wide receiver Antonio Bryant. This comes just months after the Bengals signed Bryant to a four-year, $28 million contract. Bryant’s bad knee turned out to be worse than originally expected (the bad knee was a large reason why the Bucs released Bryant early in the offseason).

Details are not yet known, but we imagine there has to be some sort of injury settlement involved. We’ll keep you posted.

Less than 24 hours ago, Bryant said he was “really close” to being healthy again. The Bengals, obviously, think otherwise. (It’s easy to think otherwise when you have a star No. 2 receiver like Terrell Owens, an improving young possession receiver like Andre Caldwell and an intriguing third-round rookie like Jordan Shipley.)

For Bryant, this could be the end of an up-and-down career. He was one of the most acclaimed wide receivers in the country at Pitt, but attitude concerns dropped him to the third round of the 2002 draft, where he was selected by the Cowboys. He showed flashes of brilliance in Dallas but butted heads with Bill Parcells (the wrong man to butt heads with).

After being released during the 2004 season, Bryant spent time with the Browns and 49ers, flashing more brilliance but also an alarming temper and lack of maturity. He fell out of football completely in 2007. Having ostensibly learned a few lessons, Bryant returned in 2008 and posted over 1,200 yards for the Buccaneers. But last season, Bryant’s knee betrayed him.

Now 29, Bryant finds himself with millions in the bank but a steep uphill climb if he wants to continue his career.

UPDATE: Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer thinks three options remain on the table with Bryant: his release, going on I.R. or simply staying with the team.

Hey Bellman:

How's a three game sweep and 7 of their last 10 for "imploding". You dumbass Steeler fans should stick to football instead of trying to incorperate any commentary on baseball. Especially with that cast of girls you call a baseball team. Shut up and prepare for a Bengal ass beating come football time. · ·
Hey Stevio...noticed you haven't been on the boards flapping your gums much lately.  remeber me...see above and let me refresh your memory.  How are those Reds and Bengals working out for you so far this fall?  And I'm the dumbass??? LOL

Hey my mobile home is painted cincinnati red until the end of the baseball season so you obviously had me pegged completely wrong. I'm not sure whats worse. Me wearing a paperbag on my head when the Bengals are horrible or all of your Steeler fan buddies wearing one because you are an embarrassment to Steeler fans and they don't want to be seen with you. Pretty bad when even fellow fans of your team look at you like the creepy uncle that no one mentions. Irrelevant? Apparently the Bengals are currently  a little more relevant than your Steelers considering they are ranked higher in almost every sports outlet's power rankings. Do the rankings mean anything as to the actual season? Not really but we're talking about your relevance claim and the rankings definately shoot that down considering that the general opinion of the NFL sports world is right now the Bengals are the better and more relevant team.

Thanks for the compliment and I am a big hit at my campground. It's ok that you aren't able to come up with much. Some peoples brains aren't really made for humor. Some are better served using their brains for other more important things like helmut filler and crushing beer cans. Thats totally ok that you are in that group. you don't need to be able to say anything remotely funny. You are a walking joke and thats good enough for me.

Antonio Bryant is just another cautionary tale of un-actualized talent.  Remember this guy was Larry Fitzgerald's predecessor.  He was a Biletnikoff winner in 2000.  Fitz won it in 2003.  The only reason he didn't go in the first round, like Fitzgerald, was because he was a dic/k.  There was one time he "borrowed" his "girlfriends" credit card to purchase plane tickets and party in FL for a few days.

As a Pitt alum, I root for our players' success, but I don't care about Bryant.  He made a lot of money in the NFL, but he'll never make Fitzgerald money even though they started with the same amount of talent.

Oh cbuck--if i were only as smart, witty, and most likely as wealthy as you--king of the mobile home kingdom--you and all you cincy heads are something to look up to--i really mean it--i am sorry for offending you smart folks with the comments about how irrelavent you, your city, your players and your team is in the grand scheme of the nfl--talk about ignorance--you all win one year and you have shed your brown bags---painted your home/vehicle orange and black--brought back your who dey beer and let the rest of the sports world see that cincitucky really is really one big happy family (deliverence?)---hey that mom stuff is gold--you must be the hit of the campground with material like that.
