Garrett Hartley was the biggest individual goat of Sunday's NFL action, as his missed 29-yard "chip shot" in overtime gave the Atlanta Falcons new life and helped them take out the New Orleans Saints 27-24 in New Orleans. Now there are reports circulating that the Saints might cut the kicker from the roster entirely.

According to Adam Schefter , the Saints plan to bring in John Carney and work him out -- depending on how he looks will directly impact Hartley's future with the organization. If Carney impresses, they'll give Hartley the boot.

It's a striking shift in the organization's view of Hartley; just a few months ago he booted the memorable game-winner against the Vikings to put the Saints in the Super Bowl.

Of course, as our own Pete Prisco noted earlier , the NFC South might just be in transit (points out the giddy blogger who picked the Falcons to win the Super Bowl this season) and that would mean that Hartley's status serves as a nice little microcosmic reminder that no one's job in the NFL is ever safe.

He missed 2 big FGs against the Vikes that could have cost them the game, and now he misses a chip shot to really cost them one, against a division rival at home. Sorry, Garrett, it's time to go, you are last year's news. And also want to mention, all 3 of the misses were indoors at home,  not a good stat or start.

The Saints ego is to big for their own head these days.  I understand the frustration of missing a chipshot in OT but at the same time, its not like he has missed them in back to back weeks or that your record is 0-3 because of his kicking issues.  The dude missed a game winner one week after making a game winner.  And dont give me the "he barely made it" or "the ball was knuckled through".  The fact is, he made it against the niners.  Lastly, dont forget that the same kicker you want to banish made the biggest kick in your franchise history which sent you to the Super Bowl.  Calm down and stop going "Steinbrenner" on your players.

I don't care what this guy did last year. He missed a chip shot in OT to beat your only division rival with a shot of dethroning you this year. And it happened in a dome, your own dome with no crowd noise to bother you. Saints would be 2 games up with an outright win if he makes that extra point-sized FG. Now they are in a dogfight for the rest of the season. He has missed too many already this year to give him another week. Good bye Garrett!

Hey, sorry, but past performance is not enough to forgive currently sucking.  Garrett Hartley is not enough of a legend to warrant keeping around if he sucks.  If a guy is a long-time player and fan favorite, then sometimes teams keep them around for the fans or out of respect, kind of like Deuce McAllister with the Saints.  Yes, Hartley made some short field goals in the playoffs, but most kickers would have done the same thing.  That's their job.  And he sucks at it right now.  He's getting paid to make FGs, and he is missing them.

Think about it this way.  If your girlfriend was the best girlfriend in the world for the last year, she did a lot for you, always wanted to please you, etc etc....but now she is cheating on you, being a bitch.. are you going to keep her around based on how she was last year?
