Todd Collins, and not Jay Cutler, took the field with the Bears to begin the second half. The reason? Jay Cutler sustained a concussion in a first half that saw him sacked an absolutely astounding nine times and has been ruled out to return to the game against the Giants.

The concussion, based on replays, actually occurred on the second-to-last play of the half (the ninth sack), when Cutler was tossed to the ground and banged his head on the turf.

Brad Biggs first reported the news on Twitter, and it almost seemed like part of the halftime joke party that half the Internet was having at Cutler and the Bears' expense.

As it turns out, though, it's a pretty serious matter -- and also something that seemed like a reasonable outcome for the Bears' quarterback given how poorly his offensive line blocked and how long he held onto the ball.

Update (10:20): Via Jose3030, we have video of when Cutler suffered the concussion.

Update (11:04): Andrea Kramer just big-leagued the Bears' medical staff by texting GM Jerry Angelo who told her that he expects Cutler to travel home with the team, which is good news.

Cutler ruled out for game with concussion

Jake Plummer said in an interview that Cutler was crazy to leave Denver.  All-pro Clady as blindside protection for a decade plus, and now look what he got.  Karma's a B!t@h, Jay.  Can't say I'm sorry.

your comments are a joke dude---first of all, after you've been saked 5 times in first quarter,,,then in the 2nd qtr you throw a slant to olsen,,,it appears that your colorblind and threw it right to the giants,,,,then replay shows that greg olsen woulda been able to catch the ball in front of defender if the koksuker woulda kept running his route be4 stopping in the g-dam middle,,,,christ, how long can a qb keep the faith when he's getting thrown around like a rag doll and then on top of that his recievers are stopping routes and hanging you to dry.  granted cutler did start holding the ball to long then, but wouldnt you say any1 would be a little gun shy at that fricken point. lovie and his passive, ho hum attitude need to leave,,,,now

As a lifelong Bronco's fan this is an excellent post describing Cutler.  He has an amazing arm but zero leadership abilities.  Everyone always wants to make excuses for this guy.  He is a below average QB because he throw picks and nobody wants to follow his lead.

Cutler f***ing quit.  He goes to the locker room at the half and feels well enough to call out his offensive line.  Yeah the O-line is pathetic, but it has been crappy all year and the team knew that coming into the season.  He WAS getting decent amount of time to throw on some of those sacks though but never threw the ball despite the fact that the Bears' receivers were getting open up the middle.  On every sack NBC was showing replays with the camera view above and behind the QB and you can see that he had open guys on just about every sack.  Yeah, some of the sacks were on the O-line because some of them he was on the ground the second he got the ball.  However, on like 3-4 of them he had open guys up the middle about 10-15 yards out.  Cutler's colors showed tonight and no wonder Denver wanted nothing to do with him.  He's a quality QB when he wants to be but he definitely is not a leader.  I don't know how anyone would want to play with him when he continues to blame others.  I hope Urlacher lets him have it after tonight. At least the Bears D was somewhat entertaining tonight and effective despite being on the field all night.

I am amazed at the lack of grammar in today's "journalism."  Awful.

You didn't notice all the journalists are getting fired, the papers have disappeared, the news doesn't even get edited or vetted anymore?  Yeah, you could complain about the position of an apostrophe as though that was the result of the downfall of traditional journalism but sports is one of only a few fields still steadily pumping out news, if you can call it that.  It's all actually advertising for the sports and franchises in question.  I am more concerned about the detrimental effect today's "journalism" is having on the state of human rights, politics and whatever line there is supposed to be between government and the 5th pillar.

But yeah, Bears' not Bear's.

Hey dopey - ever heard of English?  The writer is using plural possessive (Bears') as opposed to your view that there is only on Bear (Bear's) on the field.  Go back to middle school, that's where you'll learn that high level of English.

Only 9 sacks in one half?  Mike Martz's offensive scheme is getting better.
