And the verdict on Vikings WR Sidney Rice playing this weekend is … um, he’s going to need a little more time to figure it out.

"I'm going to see how I feel (Saturday) after a week of practice," Rice, who's listed as questionable this week, told reporters, via 1500espn.com.

"I did pretty good Wednesday, Thursday and (Friday), but I'm just going to see how it feels (Saturday)."

Rice had his hip surgery Aug. 23, and Minnesota – which cleared him for full participation Nov. 3 – is more than ready for him to return. But Rice, and I’m not saying this is a bad idea, is looking more to the future. In effect, he wants to make sure everything is completely OK with his hip before he takes the field. Plus, he doesn’t want to have to be limited during a game. If he's out there, he wants to be full go.

Which brings us back to the question why Rice waited until the season was just about to begin before getting his surgery.

One theory is that he didn’t like the fact he was only going to make $550,000 this season, so he waited until the last minute before undergoing the knife. But now he’s at a point where he has to prove to teams who might want to court him as a free agent after this season that he’s still the same player he was last year.

Rice has been practicing for two weeks, and the reviews have been pretty good. But he still hasn’t taken a hit, and, even worse for him, he doesn’t feel like the same player. Not yet anyway.

"I feel like I'm still on the same schedule – just not as fast, not as quick, don't have that explosion that I used to have at this point," Rice said. "But it's getting better, it's coming back. Just like (Thursday) I opened it up. I'm going to continue to progress and ramp it up."

The team has until 3 p.m. Saturday to activate Rice from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

UPDATE (7:06 p.m.):
According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Rice is expected to make his 2010 debut Sunday vs. the Bears.
