Browns name Delhomme official starter for Sunday

Not all that much ado has been made of Jake Delhomme's possible on-field reunion with the Carolina Panthers, because it's been pretty much assumed that the Browns won't risk greater injury to Colt McCoy's ankle by forcing him against the Panthers.

And Eric Mangini confirmed on Friday that Cleveland's rolling with Delhomme as the starter against the Cats.

That's via our Cleveland Rapid Reporter Marty Gitlin, who notes Mangini's confirmation leading up to the weekend.

Delhomme hasn't started since Week 1 when he injured his ankle -- Seneca Wallace yanked his starting spot even after his injury -- and now he's playing for a team that's paying him $7 million and against a team that's paying him $12 million (I pointed this out to members of my relatives in Florida, who were all busy lamenting the Jaguars quarterback situation; they were amazed).

This is the ideal opportunity for Delhomme, who surely feels strong emotions following the Panthers cutting him (although, yeah, he can wipe them away with $100 Bills) and would like to prove that they'd be better off having held onto him than running with Matt Moore.

Given that Moore's done for the season and the Panthers stand a decent chance of rolling Brian St. Pierre out on the field -- if he's healthy enough to play -- Jake could probably win that argument without even playing.

Now he just needs to avoid throwing the interceptions that made him an infamous scapegoat for the Panthers a just a year ago.

With 3 QB's all having injuries means 1 of 2 things 1. The Offensive line is not that good. 2. The WR's cant get open.

Well, considering Joe Thomas is an All-Pro, Eric Steinbach is leading the vote for LG in the Pro Bowl, and Alex Mack made the all-rookie team last year and has been a huge part of Peyton Hillis' success; I would say that our WRs suck.  Massaquoi, Robiskie, and Stuckey are bums.  Our best receiver is a toss-up between Peyton Hillis and Ben Watson.  Josh Cribbs was looking like he improved a lot at WR, which could be great, but even then he would only be a good #3 on most teams.  I think Holmgren will go big this offseason, his track record shows that he isn't afraid to spend money.  The future is actually bright for the Brownies.

You're an idiot!  Don't speak for "dyehard" fans dying every game stooge, you're obviously one of the slight of heart fans that hail from the trouble Muni lot.  If anything, look at what we've done this season statistically and how close the games have been, even when both Delhomme and Wallace were in as starters.  If anything, we should be a ton better in the win column, and this team has really rallied around McCoy.  Sure, it would be great to win, but we're seriously starting all over again and it takes time to build a franchise.  We've got the key ingredient in McCoy and the rest of it will come with offseason acquisitions and the draft.  We're about a year away from being a playoff team, barring the obvious injuries.  If anything, the cup should be half full for Cleveland fans - get with the program and do more than feel sorry for yourself.

I agree if McCoy is able to play then I hope he plays. I hope this isnt a Mangini move. They highly overpaid Delhomme. The guy is waaaaay past his time as an NFL starter.I would rather them play Wallace than Delhomme. Remember Mangini didnt want McCoy at that point of the draft. That was a Holmgrern move. With 3 QB's all having injuries means 1 of 2 things 1. The Offensive line is not that good. 2. The WR's cant get open. If Mcoy is hurting then I agree that he should not play. But if he can why waste more time on Delhomme. I dont think he'll even be on the roster next year. But one thing I have noticed around town is there isnt the same excitement in the air about Delhomme as there was with McCoy. Delhomme needs this game to show not only his old team but the NFL that he can still play QB in this league. When Delhomme was the QB he really didnt do much. Matter of fact he made some bone headed plays in my eyes. It was almost like he tried to do to much to prove he can still play. Lets face it the only reason he's here anyway is because we were the only team to offer him a starting job. New Orleans the other team that wanted him told him he would be a back up (of course). Hopefully Delhomme can pull it together one more time against his old team and then hand the ball to McCoy.
