Although the Cowboys, under interim coach Jason Garrett (and for that matter, QB Jon Kitna), continue to impress, beating the Colts on the road 38-35 in overtime today, they suffered a big loss when rookie WR Dez Bryant broke his ankle.

This injury, which occurred on a kick return in the fourth quarter, obviously will mark the end of his rookie season.

He finishes his freshman season with 44 catches, 547 yards and a team-leading six touchdowns. He also averaged 14.3 yards per punt with two returns for scores.

Not bad for a guy who refuses to carry other people’s shoulder pads.

UPDATE (11:42 p.m.):
According to Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas, Bryant will undergo ankle surgery Monday morning.

"That sets us back," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told Archer. "That sets us back. I really feel bad for him, but it really sets us back."

Settle down dude, was't even talking about this particular injury, but I do know Dez takes too much punishment trying to run over people. All those violent collisions add up and take there toll over time. Ofcourse an ankle injury isn't something you get from a collision, lol.

The real point is a tall person should never be used as a kick returner, just too much length to get tangeled into a pretzel. There is a reason you almost never see a kick returner over 6' tall.

Sorry -- also, "major injury" -- a broken clavical that did not even require surgery is hardly a "major injury".  Cowboys do not need to worry about Romo coming back next year, certainly not to the extent where you reach in the draft for a QB over actual needs like OL and ILB.

@AZDustDevils -- I will agree with you that the last thing Dallas needs to focus on in next year's draft is another WR.  I am looking at safety's and OL 1st, followed closely by some youth at LB if I am Dallas.  That said -- Romo "getting up in years"?  Guy is like 31.  Hardley old for a QB.  Drafting a QB should not be a priority for Dallas at this point.  As for Doug Free -- no he did not have his best game of the year yesterday.  He has, however, had a very solid year -- probably the best and most consistent of the Dallas OL -- especially for a young player in his first year as a starter, and his first year at LT at that.  Cut Free some slack.  Peace.

Dez and Percy both try to run over and through defenders on kick off returns, not smart. When there's no place to go you find a nice spot to dive to the ground without making it look too obvious.

First, avoiding contact where possible is smart but I do not want anybody on my team looking for a "nice spot to dive to the ground" rather than play football.  If you can avoid the defender and keep running great, otherwise take the contact and get some more yards.  Second, Dez Bryant's injury did not occur from him trying to "run over and through defenders".  Bryant was hurt when he was takled from behind by a lunging defender  and his ankle was trapped under the defender.  The injury had nothing to do with anything Bryant did or did not do, just one of those unfortunate things that happen in a football game sometimes.
