The 49ers defense took a big loss in the second quarter of the Chargers game tonight when San Francisco DE Justin Smith was ejected for pushing an official.

As Smith tussled with one of San Diego’s players following a first down, umpire Garth DeFelice pushed Smith away to break up the fight. It didn’t appear that Smith was looking at the umpire – so he probably didn’t know who he was touching – but he gave him a light push.

The official immediately threw the flag, giving the 49ers a 15-yard penalty and sending Smith to the bench (and eventually, the locker room) for the game.

For the record, Smith leads the 49ers with 5.5 sacks.

That's the rule.  If you put your hands on an official, it's an automatic ejection.  Not even a judgement call.

J83NJ,

If thats the rule thats fine. If thats the case the refs should keep his hands off the players don't you think. Why can the refs touch the players but it's totally illegal if turned around. I believe the ref went up to smith and put his elbow in his chest. I still stick with the opinion of that being weak. I can see the 15 yard penalty but no way should he have been ejected.

I have to agree watching this take Place My first thought was " why is the ref comming off like a tough guy " It appeared to be intentional

on the ref's part   and not so on J smiths  We all know how intense the line can become and Id expect  the refs to more aware then

most. while the word FIX  didnt  jump to mind! The thought that the Refs have once agian influenced the game . and That is  the

worst part of this all in my opinon.

Removing an elbow from digging into your chest is NOT unsportsmanlike.

That did not warrant a flag.... The official was actually pushing Smith the opposite way he was suppose to go.  Smith was suppose to be on the other side of the line of scrimmage.

Was a terrible call, not sure how anyone can support it.   He did not shove, push or hit the official in any way.  The official was touching him(pushing him to an area he wasn't suppose to be) and Smith merely shrugged him off.

Don't believe me?

I think it was an emotional call.  That ref was pissed, for an instant i thought he was going to crawl up Justin Smith's ass and explode.  Quickly relizing the 49er could crush him with a pinky, he did the next best thing.  Throw the flag.   Justin Smith's contact was incendental, he wasn't looking and he instintively thought a another player was pushing him back.  But the referee couldn't see that.

Look at it this way, at least Smith didn't have to stay and watch his team get blown out again! I would of rather been ejected than stay and get creamed all over the field!!

I can't believe there's no article on here commenting on how absolutely insane and ridiculous this ejection was.  This wannabe tough guy umpire basically tried to pick a fight with Smith, there was some minor pushing and shoving after a play, and this moron comes flying in, gets in between the players and for some reason focuses more on Smith than the Chargers player, starts pushing Smith backwards, and Smith just very lightly moves the umpire's arm off his chest, and he's thrown out of the game?!  It was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen in a football game, and it had fix written all over it.  And I'm not a 49ers fan, I'm just a football fan who was quite disappointed with this.

Doesn't Matter

No big deal---the 49ers are terrible and would have lost anyway. Singletary needs to go!

What a joke.  That wasn't anything that deserved a penalty let alone an ejection.  He put his hand on the ref's elbow, I wouldn't exactly call that pushing an official.  I'd like the league to start penalizing refs who blow calls.  Taking a player like that out of the game for something so minor is a big hit to SF and the league should be looking into things like that and letting the fans know about it.  We need to know that someone is policing the police.

2xcityofchamps:"That was pretty weak. It wasn't enough that he threw a flag for 15 yards? For that minor push he throws the guy out. Wow. That's how pathetic the NFL has become i guess. Mission accomplished for roger goodell."
