49ers owner won't commit to Singletary next week

No one really thinks that Mike Singletary will have a head coaching job after 2010. That notion was heavily reinforced when the 49ers lost to the Rams on Sunday, ending their inexplicably-still-alive playoff hopes.

Turns out, there's a chance he might not even have a job next week -- Jed York, Niners owner, spoke to reporters following San Fran's 25-17 loss to St. Louis and wouldn't confirm nor deny that Singletary will coach Week 17.

We want to take our time before we make any decision like that. You don't want to make an emotional decision right now after the game," York said via Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

York's been pretty faithful to the former interim, given how poorly the Niners have played despite a ridiculously easy path to the playoffs.

And there's probably a 90-plus percent chance that Singletary won't end up coaching the 49ers in 2011. But for now, York and Co. need to sit back and see if there's a move that needs to be made ASAP (read: can we get Jim Harbaugh before his BCS game?).

If there's not, Singletary may get one more shot at flipping a coin between Alex and Troy Smith.

Bill Walsh's idea of how to prepare for an NFL coaching career--apprentice under Don Coryell and Paul Brown as offensive coordinator. Get a masters in defensive strategy from San Jose State. Work as a head coach for Stanford. Never, never, never shoot your mouth off about wanting to be the best NFL coach who ever lived.
Singletary's idea of preparing to be a head coach--work as a linebacker coach, move right on up to a head coaching position and stand in front of a mirror telling yourself you're the best NFL coach who has ever lived, get the host of the Mike Singletary Show fired for daring to question whether Mike Singletary is the best NFL coach who has ever lived, then get yourself fired for having no idea what is going on on the field offensively or defensively.
But don't cry for Mike--Jesus loves him!
