Following the 49ers' loss to the St. Louis Rams (an ugly 25-17 elimination party), Jed York didn't exactly endorse his head coach, and it seemed likely that Mike Singletary would be fired.

York didn't wait to think about his decision, though, and he asked Singletary to resign following the loss. Singletary refused, however, and York was forced to fire him and replace him with Jim Tomsula, the Niners defensive line coach.

"I want to thank Mike Singletary for the passion and effort that he brought to this organization," York said in a statement. "He is a tremendous person for whom I will always have great respect."

Singletary was also grateful in a statement.

"One of the greatest experiences of my life was having the opportunity to coach the San Francisco 49ers," Singletary said. "What made it so special were the players. They were some of the most outstanding men I have ever been around in my life. The coaches were truly professionals. I wish the 49ers nothing but the best."

One of those coaches, Tomsula, has his work cut out for him.

Unfortunately for Tomsula, the interim is only "one week," meaning he won't have much time to justify himself as a possible full-time candidate, although it seems unlikely that he'd nail the gig anyway -- York mentioned that the team isn't afraid to spend money and that means, if the right coach is available, the Niners could be looking at an upgrade.

As for Singletary, he was only kept afloat by the fact that San Fran, who's horribly underperformed this season, resides in the NFC West, where winning five games still gives you a shot at making the playoffs.

His head coaching tenure will be remembered for his many public antics (admitting he dropped his pants, yelling at "Yahoo! commercials," etc and his inability to realize the faults with his own quarterbacks. And that's unfortunate, because Singletary's a hell of a position coach and probably deserves a job with another NFL team in the pretty immediate future.

Mike Singletary fired as 49ers coach

I agree to a point there.. Being a fan of the 49ers since the mid 80's & the begining of my life in sports, it was a tough season to watch. Being in Reno i am graced with the ability to call Frisco a home team & have the ability to watch the games w/ out the NFL network.
So with that being said... Mr. Singletary my hat goes off to you, you did what you could with what you have to work with... As for our QB shuffle, we have tallent n yet no direction in my eyes. But i also see that Alex Smith is in no way close to comparison to the greats that the 9ers have had behind center... If your willing to Pay for a Head Coach, y not look @ the coaching staff as a whole, n a team to go with it. From QB to WR's n a line to protect... Face it, like it or not us as fans (those who are still loyal) have been patient going back to before Nolin, when it comes to "RESTRUCTURE"... Is it too hard to let the ego's go n let the coach do what hes supposed to do... When you look at it the team dont need much we have the tallent but need the direction, Mr. Singletary isnt just another staff member who had to fill in, hes a defensive god, n has a great head on them shoulders defensively, why dump it on him, he did his best, but our defence could still use the guy... We could use some veteran stats to follow the rookie talent... (N trust me DAVID CARR isnt the anwer) not to knock him down, but how can a team with 2 #1 draft picks have to shuffle n dance, we have had so many oppertunities at so many players from free agency, n now your making money is no option comments, why did it have to come to this for that???

MR. YORK YOU HAVE YOUR NEW STADIUM, NOW LETS RETURN THE FAVOR TO THE FANS N ONCE AGAIN BECOME THE POWERHOUSE WE WERE BEFORE.. THE TALEN IT DEFENATLY OUT THERE, LETS GO GET IT... THE YANKEES CAN DO IT IN BASEBALL WHY CANT WE... (INTENDED AS A JOKE(I KNOW WERE DEALING WITH SALARY CAP ISSUES)

Mike Singletary fired as 49ers coach

Yes, Mike Singletary needed to be removed as HC from The SF 49ers. I know I was getting very frustrated as a fan. To think this team holds 5 super bowl titles and is in a division where they cant even beat there own rivalry's is terrible. But when he kept switching QB's throughout the season, it just looked so unprofessional, and he was obviously unsure of his own decisions. Niether QB is going to be satisfactory for the 49er fans after having hall of famers like Montana and Young to follow. We need a talent like New England has to say the least. So Mr. York, put your money where your mouth is. This team has not been anywhere near where Eddie D had it, he is your uncle, now follow in his steps and make us proud the way we were back in the 80's and 90's. As for Mr. Singletary, good luck to you. You are a passionate talented man, and you have given football fans all over the country a great insperation from your past acomplishments. I wish you god speed

Mike Singletary fired as 49ers coach

Sadly, Singletary has a passion FOR FOOTBALL but does not realize that you can not treat men as boys.  TAKE A NOTE FROM PHIL JACKSON. Learn from Tony Dungee.  Mike Tomlin too.  KINDNESS AND SUPPORT GET THE JOB DONE, NOT HARRASSING.
EARN RESPECT AND GOOD PLAY WILL FOLLOW...BUT EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES INCLUDING YOU....

Mike Singletary fired as 49ers coach

I know a lot of you people might feel that it was wrong for the 49ers to dump him the way he did, but he deserved everything he got.... I only wish the owner came down from the box after he did a merry go round with his QB's, and fired his ass right there on the spott on national tv.... Most of you guys are not from the bay area, and don't follow the 49ers as closely as myself or other 49ers fans on this board... But I have to say YES he was a complete and total embarassment!!! Starting from when he first came into the locker room pulling his pants down in the locker room, to his hiring/firing of Jimmy Raye, to the way he handled the media (wether it be in the press room, the coaches show on the CBS station, or the way he dealt with the local radio affiliates morning show), to the way he would jump around screaming and crying on the sidelines when he was mad at the umps, to the way he poorly handled the QB situation.... Yes the 49ers didn't have a good QB, but there was better ways of dealing with it. I was happy as a lark when Troy Smith got into the idiots face!!! It's about time, somebody talk back to him....

Why do we as fans always think that the player is in the wrong when there is a screaming match on the sidelines between a player and coach??? Maybe if you guys followed this franchise as much as 49ers fans do, you would understand why this pathetic excuse for a head coach was and deserved to be fired with 1 game left....
