In the closing minutes of Arizona’s improbable win against the Cowboys, wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald too
k a nasty shot (he got his bell rung). Anyone watching the game could see Fitzgerald blinking repeatedly and trying to get his bearings. The star stayed in the game, however, and, sure enough, caught a chains-moving pass on fourth-and-15. He was in a fog at that moment, which is why rookie Andre Roberts told him the play after the Cardinals broke their huddle.
"I don't remember much of that game to be honest with you," Fitzgerald told Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic. "The play before I took a shot and I was a little bit out of it. I knew I had to run up the seam, saw the ball and knew I had to make a play."
It’s easy to ask leading questions like, “Are NFL teams only worried about concussions when the game is NOT on the line?” But it’s hard to blame the Cardinals for not taking Fitzgerald out of the game in this instance. Arizona was out of timeouts and priming to run a crucial fourth down play. And Fitzgerald did not stay on the ground or take himself out of the game. Because of close-up camera shots, viewers watching at home could see that the wideout was looking foggy. But if Fitzgerald is making his way back to the huddle, it’s not easy for people on the sidelines to see that (especially given the intensity of the situation).
