Report: Cowboys likely will tap Garrett as coach

The Fort Worth Star Telegram is reporting that the Cowboys likely will name Jason Garrett as their full-time head coach.

That doesn’t mean Dallas won’t interview others, because in order to satisfy the Rooney Rule, owner Jerry Jones has to speak with at least one minority candidate. That’s probably why Cowboys WR coach Ray Sherman will get the chance to talk to Jones about the job.

While a plethora of hot coaching hires will pop up during the selection process – including Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden and Jim Harbaugh, and possibly Tennessee’s Jeff Fisher or Carolina’s John Fox – Clarence E. Hill Jr. writes “it's very clear inside Cowboys headquarters that Garrett is the man for the job.”

Who cares what color your skin is, the owner should hire whoever he thinks is right, just because the whole team is black, makes Art Shell a better coach than Tom Landry?? It makes me sick that people still make everything about race.

What really bothers me about this rule is the hypocrisy.  Not only is it supposed to encourage minority hiring but it is also supposed to open the doors for coaches by widening the interveiw process.  Some coaches who wouldn't otherwise get interviews now have their names out there.  However, in Minnesota's case, they just hire the guy they want without interviewing any other coaches and nothing happens, simply because Frazier is a minority.  The same thing happened in Indy(twice actually).  But when Detroit hired Steve Mariucci without interviewing others they got nailed.  The rule needs to either be changed or completely eliminated.

The Rooney Rule is such a joke. I wonder how Ray Sherman really feels knowing that he is just being interviewed because he is the easiest black candidate to interview? Jerry only has to pay for a cab ride instead of a plane ticket flying another black coach into Dallas. This politically correct joke of a world we live in today is pathetic. I can't wait until enough hispanics are in the league so that it can incorporate the Jose Rule as well.

ok, I agree that the rooney rule is a joke but your second comment is purely opinion. How can you say that its clear that minorities are not among the best candidates for coaching positions? The majority of NFL players today are black so at some point the best candidates will be black. Having white skin color does not make you the most qualified man for the job. Thats the only thing that is clear to me.

Rooney rule = absolute silliness.  The Cowboys won't be relevant again until Jerry Jones takes several steps back and lets football men run the show.

I agree; it was at the end of the day the fullbacks mistake. But are they using the same protection schemes with capable offensive lineman?  If they could cover the defenders with a little more efficiency with the offensive lineman maybe that opens up other avenues where that wouldn't have even been the play they were running.  The fact of the matter is; their line sucks and opened up Romo to multiple hits.  At one point it was bound to happen.  Imagine Tom Brady behind the Cowboys line?  He wouldn't have made it a year.
