Marvin Lewis has a chance at Pitt job

Now that Mike Haywood has been fired from his job as head coach at Pitt, a scant couple weeks after winning the job (those felony domestic battery charges will get you every time), much of the speculation has focused on Rich Rodriguez taking over the Panthers program if Michigan axes him.

But rumors have been whispered all season around the Bengals organization that coach Marvin Lewis, assuming he doesn’t return to Cincinnati, might like that job, because it’s only a scant few miles from his hometown.

Now, the NFL Network's Michael Lombardi writes that Lewis is on the short list of candidates to replace Haywood.

In eight seasons in Cincinnati, Lewis – who also coached linebackers for the Steelers from 1992-95 – has a record of 59-65-1 (entering today’s game).

UPDATED (5:08 p.m.):
After the Bengals loss to the Ravens, Lewis was asked about the newly-vacant position at Pitt.

"I haven't thought about it," said Lewis, via Rapid Reporter Jon Gallo. "I don't know what happens from here."

Lewis also said that he wanted to return to coach the Bengals, but he's been given no indication that he will.

Marvin Lewis has a chance at Pitt job

Pitt needs a credible coach to restore a tarnished image.  I would strongly consider a coach with strong accademics along with success at a major college.  The name that comes to mind is Pat Fitztgerald from Northwestern.  Probably wouldn't leave Big Ten for Pitt but I'd make a strong push for him.

Marvin Lewis has a chance at Pitt job

If I'm the owner in Houston, and want to keep Kubiak, I'd make a big offer to Marvin Lewis to run the defense for the Texans. I'd also think about Ryan in Cleveland. He'd know what to do woth those steaks in Texas.

The last thing Pitt needs is another NFL coach after they just fired one.

Pederson is lucky to still be the Pitt AD, if you take into account his disastrous choice of Callahan at Nebraska followed by the Haywood fiasco.

Nonetheless, the Panthers should be able to get a good coach between Bradley, Leach, June Jones, Rich Rod, or another high profile coordinator like McIllwain at Alabama or Crist at Wisconsin.

However, when you consider Pederson's track record of head football coaching hires, anything could happen.

As a result, Pitt fans should be really nervous right now.

Marvin Lewis has a chance at Pitt job

Any Cincinnati sports fan who would run Marvin Lewis out of town deserves to have him go to Pitt and make Bearcat fans miserable. He'll be more successful there than here. Wouldn't suprise me if he has more wins next season at a college job than his successor here has in the professional ranks.

Marvin Lewis has a chance at Pitt job

This is what should happen.  Tom Bradley should be hired as the head football coach.  He's from the Pittsburgh area and would be a great recruiter for the area.  Hire Marvin Lewis as D coordinator and Rodriguez as O coordinator.  How about that???????????

Marvin Lewis has a chance at Pitt job

To me this means Joepa wants him out so his son can take over when he gives it up Penn State would make Bradley HC if Joepa retired today

Marvin Lewis has a chance at Pitt job

Just read this from Altoona Mirror
Joe Paterno believes Tom Bradley would be a good choice as Pitt's new head coach, and even the Panthers' athletic director appears to have warmed up to the idea.

Pitt AD Steve Pederson didn't give Bradley much thought the first time around in the hiring practice, but he had some good words about Penn State's defensive coordinator Sunday.

Pederson told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that Bradley is "a very strong and very attractive candidate" for the Pitt job.

After their last coach, Wannie, I don't even count Haywood, you'd think that Pitt would go for a coach with experience coaching at the college level.  Stay away from the coaches with NFL resumes and go for someone, anyone, with a good background in the college game.  Someone who could recruit wouldn't hurt either.
