Tony Sparano's status is finally clear: he'll be coaching the Miami Dolphins through 2013, thanks to an extension that the 'Fins gave him on Friday night.

That's according to the Miami Sun-Sentinel's Mike Berardino who cites a source that believes the extension will give him the "same range" of his $2.8 million salary through the additional years and that he'll see an "expanded role" in player personnel decisions.

After all, what's the one solution to trying to hire a new coach without firing your current coach? Give him more money, obviously! (It's similar to the Seattle beer situation, except more awkward).

No, but seriously, Sparano might not be coaching until 2013, but he'll at least be getting paid through that season, which is good, because the way the Dolphins treated him over the past few days was absolutely reprehensible.

Report: Sparano signs 2-year extension with Fins

I agree with you on the brocrush the guy is a pretty good offensive coordinator and head coach at that level. What confuses me is the out cry of poor disrespected Sporano. The truth is he failed at his job, and by going 1-7 at home he failed huge. Maybe he is looking at it like he failed forward. So if a person with a normal job performed at his level of incompitance would you still say he was disrespected. Or maybe it is the fans who are being disrespected. After all if you lie down with dogs you end up with Dolphins.

My feeling is this, the owner sucks. This brocrush everyone had on Harbaugh was pathetic. They should have at least sat Tony Sporano down and told him their intentions.  The guy has a family and some pride.  Is it his fault that quarterbacks named Chad apparently suck in South Florida?  Going with a hgh profilie coach to sell tickets, but eventually the winning football games at home is more important. Hopefully the Phins bounce back, do well in the draft, and improve next year.  I just hope Miami does not reach for a QB, because with someone like Jake Locker, I really do not see an immediate upgrade and someone who is ready to start. Maybe sign a vet, McNabb?

Looking back, Jake Long was a good pick, a great pick would have been Matt Ryan.

Not the ideal situation for the Fins

Tony S was left hanging out there this week, which is unfortunate to say the least. However, it does send a very strong message to the coaches and players that the status quo won't cut it in South Beach, and changes will be made to get back to being a play-off team. I don't think the players will think less of Tony- reports from ESPN, etc. have said the players actually like him and respect him, so little will change after this week's drama. Henne is the key- does Miam stick with him for another season, or is this experiment over and do they pursue a new QB for 2011???

The only good that comes from this decision is that as long as Ireland and Sparano are with the Dolphins we will not have to wait as long to see who we pick in the first round. This is going to go down as the decision that rivals the signing of Ryan Leaf as the dumbest move ever made in football history. You can fist pump all the field goals you want but this team was pathetic on offense and you can blame that on the coordinator but it was these guys who brought him here to begin with. Ross is a pathetic excuse for an owner but hey it is his money and he can piss it away anyway he wants. Me I am thankful now I can save the money I was going to waste on season tickets. It is more comfortable to watch from my couch anyway, but the best part is I can turn it off.

OK so how can he feel good about this, and how are the players supposed to respect him or the organization?  I believe he was still under contract when they went to CA looking for a replacement, so what does an extention mean?  The players see this so how do they have faith in there contracts, or anything that they are told as far as where the team is going in the future?  Sparano should have told them to stuff their contract, me would have lost some money but gained a tremendous amount of fan, player, and self respect.  Plus he would have found another job in football with in a month.
