Casserly: Jerry Richardson called Andrew Luck

We already thought we knew why Andrew Luck wanted to return to Stanford for his red shirt junior year: he wants to stay together one more season with his recruiting class, he wants to finish his degree and, presumably, he wants to try to win a national title.

But Panthers owner Jerry Richardson wanted to make sure there wasn’t another (more nefarious) reason. According to CBS’ own Charlie Casserly on The NFL Today, Richardson called Luck to determine if one reason he wasn’t entering the NFL Draft was because Carolina will get the No. 1 pick.

Reported Casserly: “He was told unequivocally no."

And if Richardson and his personnel people still want to take a QB in the Draft - and here's what our mock draft looks like - here’s Casserly’s list of the top remaining signal-callers that will be available: Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert, Washington’s Jake Locker, Arkansas’ Ryan Mallett and Auburn’s Cam Newton.

But at least this way, Richardson didn’t have his feelings hurt.

CavScout - Quit spitting misinformation!!!  The Panthers have never been mentioned for a move to LA.  I repeat NEVER!  You are thinking of our fellow expansion team, the Jacksonville Jaguars who cannot fill their stadium.  As you said, we have not had a blackout in almost a decade.  I think in Charlotte we may have had like 2-3 ever since 1995.  Why have you never seen a Panthers fan???  Because you live in rural Texas, get a grip man.  To make matters worse, you are a Pats fan that lives in rural Texas!  Your a joke and know nothing.  The Panthers like I mentioned are one of the best smaller market teams in the league who have 60,000 PSL owners.  Our city is probably the fastest growing in the Southeast (Think Austin, TX).   Are we the Steelers, Pats, or Colts - no.  But our total WL record since our inception is probably in the top 50% of the league.

Heck yeah I'm ashamed...2 wins tends to do that.  But don't mistake that for a lack of support.  It's why I'm defending Richardson's phone call to Luck.  It's probably the only prudent decision he's made this year.  If a little arm twisting will fetch us the best quarterback prospect in ten years, then have at it.  If the Pats were in the same position (2 wins and no QB), wouldn't you want Kraft to do the same thing?  We aren't all so lucky as to have a Tom Brady behind center.

It chaps my a$$ mostly because I like to argue, lol. But seriously,it's already been put out there that the reason he called was to make sure that Luck wasn't trying to avoid going to Carolina, and I just don't think putting the kid on the spot was a cool thing to do. And while you're taking shots at my beloved Pats,I notice you don't post your team...ashamed?

Still a bit touchy over 19-1 eh there Cava$$?  Guess I'd still be pissed too.  Anyway, the owner of a pro football franchise called the individual that would have been the consensus #1 pick  --  maybe to wish him well, or to congratulate him for his committment to education, or to ask if our having the pick was a factor.  Apparently the call didn't offend Luck at all, so why does it chap your a$$ so much?

Actually Boilerpigz (really?),my "rants" as you put it at least have these small, unimportant things like "facts" and "research". And since you took the time to look at my profile to know I live in Texas, then you should have noticed I'm a lifelong Patriots fan (being born in Maine and all). I couldn't care less about the Cowgirls. I'm not taking potshots,I just don't think Jerry Richardson had any right to question Luck at all. That was unfairly putting the kid on the spot. If Luck would have rather stayed in school then play for the Panthers, that's his business and if it wasn't the reason then what does it matter? I just don't think Richardson was in the right on this. So take your meds and calm down,Boilerpork...it'll be ok.

Get a clue Cava$$.  The article simply said that JR placed a call to Luck.  He just wanted to see if Luck was staying in school to avoid playing for the Panthers.  If he was, then like any owner who gives a sh-t he'd make some changes.  It'd be too late to help with Luck, but it might make a difference down the road. What makes you assume he "grilled" the kid?  Sure, it's been a lean couple of years for pro football in Texas, and of course it makes you feel less inadequate to take pot shots at other teams, but at least keep your rants just the tiniest bit rational.

would someone PLEASE show me an article by any sportswriter, journalist, sports magazine or newspaper column that mentions this impending move of the Panthers to LA??...I have yet to see or read anything other than posts from sources on this and other webskites that make mention of this...is this speculation or is there something in the NFL going on that I'm not aware?...what would be the reason the Panthers would feel the need to move to a city that has already lost 2 teams when they have the financial stablility to stay where they are?...if it were based on a successful records from year to year then the Browns, Texans, Jags, Bengals, Lions and many others would have been gone long ago
