Hue Jackson named Raiders head coach

The wait is over -- Hue Jackson has been named the new head coach of the Oakland Raiders on Monday night, the team announced. Jackson's now the sixth (!) head coach of the Bay-Area franchise since 2003.

Jackson's been expected to be named the head coach ever since Jan. 4, when the Raiders announced they wouldn't pick up Tom Cable's option. But things have progressed at a typical Raiders-style pace until it was finally reported by multiple outlets (Michael Smith of ESPN was first) that Jackson had been hired.

It appears that Al Davis finally made up his mind, however, and made a move (coincidentally one day after it was reported that he docked Cable, $120,000 during the 2010 season). Davis was lured to Jackson based primarily on Oakland's improvement on offense since Jackson took over last year -- after taking over the playcalling duties from Cable, Jackson helped the Raiders double their scoring output from 2009.

Al Saunders is the expected candidate to fill the role from which Jackson was promoted -- offensive coordinator -- and while the Raiders' lag time meant many people were scooped off the coaching-staff pile of names, Jackson's been calling around about forming a staff for a week or so.

More importantly, we can finally put our Coaching Hot Seat Tracker to rest (at least until next year) as every NFL team has filled the position.

Amazingly, as Tim Kawakami points out on Twitter, this is Al Davis' 11th consecutive head coaching hire that followed the pattern of alternating between offensive coordinator and offensive-line coach (Mike Shanahan was an OC, Art Shell was a line coach, Mike White - OC, Joe Bugel - OL, Jon Gruden - OC, Bill Callahan - OL, Norv Turner - OC, Art Shell - OL, Lane Kiffin - OC, Tom Cable - OL, Jackson - OC). That's a terrifying amount of predictability from such a kooky character.

Splendid when getting going to your on-line store make the most, it's ended up being few months if you ask me. Adequately the next few paragraphs that can seems patiently waited in support of way too long.

Best move Al has made since hiring Chucky. Cable sealed his fate when he lost to two of the worst teams in the league the Cardinals and the 49ers. Sitting Cambell down half way through the second game didn't help him either as Cambell was a Al Davis pick up. Shoot he named him the next Jim Plunkett and when Cambell played well that was the icing on the top. Well he only played well when our running game was on so we will see next season (if there is a next season) what Hue can do with the young receiver group he's got. Another talent in Jacoby Ford out shided DHB like Louis Murphy did the year before. DHB is another J.Russell pick up bust, cut him and lets move on.

While I dont care when we become Revelant, I AM interested in when we become Relevant.  That said, I agree that until Al truly steps aside and lets some new thinking guide the organization the Raiders are going to languish in mediocrity.

While I am sure that the "locker room" will benefit from his promotion,  it sounds like another coordinator set up for failure by being out of his element. I mean, who is going to call the plays? Hue or Al?  Al Davis is worse than Mike Brown.  Good luck, Hue.  You'll need it.

Hue is a good choice for the Raiders - I wasn't overly impressed with Cable, but he had the Raiders playing a lot better this year than the past..... oh, 7 years - a lot of that has been credited to Hue and probably rightly so. But isn't it the HCs job to hire and oversee a OC and a DC. The Raiders had improvements on boths sides of the ball.... and special teams also.

what I don't get about the article is -

But things have progressed at a typical Raiders-style pace until it was finally reported by multiple outlets (Michael Smith of ESPN was first) that Jackson had been hired.

13 days from Cables firing to Hue's hiring is not a long time.... it took the Panthers the exact same number of days to hire Rivera after firing Fox... and took Denver 10 days from the end of the season to hire Fox...

IMO hiring a head coach is not something to take lightly, especially for we Raiders fans -and we've been through a lot of hirings since the super bowl debacles and subsequent dismal years

and lastly the article says Hue had been trying to hire a staff for about a week.... so it seems that the hire was made, but just not announced... BFD...

If what Jackson did as OC translates into good team leadership, this will be a great hire. But will Al truly give him enough rope?
