ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting that Bengals QB Carson Palmer wants out of Cincinnati and, if he’s not dealt, he could retire from football.

Palmer is coming off a tough year – though his statistics (61.8 completion percentage, 3,970 yards, 26 TDs and 20 INTs) aren’t that terrible – and despite the organization’s attempts to surround him with receiving weapons, it appears he’s already on the downside of his career.

But, like I wrote earlier, it doesn’t appear the Bengals, coming off a 4-12 season, feel the need to make improvements.

That might have something to do with Palmer’s desire to leave, although he has four years and $50 million of base salary left on his contract (how bad must Palmer want to go if he’s going to leave THAT much money on the table?).

And what will Cincinnati do without Palmer if he’s dealt or retires, considering backup QB Jordan Palmer – Carson’s brother – is not a starting NFL quarterback? Well, the Bengals have the No. 4 pick in the Draft, so they could take a QB there, or they could grab a veteran free agent like Marc Bulger for a short-term solution.

But losing Palmer is a big deal, and no matter how mediocre he’s been the past two season, this is bad news for the Bengals.

Report: Palmer wants trade or will retire

The Bengals would still own his rights if he does that and he wouldn't be able to "sign with another team" so that would do him and the Bengals no good at all.

Report: Palmer wants trade or will retire

I just heard the Bengals play by play guy on 950 KJR in Seattle saying that Mike Brown, if he stays with what he's down in the past, will NOT trade Carson Palmer.
He also said that Palmer may just go the route of Barry Sanders and retire, he's about to have his third child and has other things outside of football he can do, it's not that he doesn't want to play but is at a point in his life and career where he wants to be in a position to win and it doesn't look like the Bengals are heading in that direction.
It's not that he dislikes Marvin Lewis but when you haven't been successful doing what you've been doing injuries be damned and don't make any changes in philosophy or coaching staff then you have to ask yourself if you're spinning your wheels and going nowhere.
I heard the Bengals play by play announcer say that Mike Brown is very loyal to his coaches and that's to be commended BUT if you WANT to win you have to be able to objectively examine all aspects of the team, coaches and players and adjust! make changes, do whatever you need to do to ensure success of your football team and yes that means QB too.
This may be a great opportunity for the Bengals to make a change of the face of their franchise, to move forward in a new direction and though QB is the toughest position to fill they may be able to do it via trade or Free agency, you could trade Palmer to San Francisco or Seattle, get some draft picks and or players for him and then go after someone like Donovan McNabb who has plenty lweft in the tank, ran the west coast offense in Philly and desperately needs a change of scenary.
It's worth thinking about.

the resigning of Lewis is to blame here.

everyone can see this guy isn't a great mastermind. Carson Palmer also has to be concerned about the welfare of his wallet when in the locker room with so many criminals.

I like Palmer but he is not the QB he once was. Maybe a change of location will revive him, he was terrible last season.

He is a decent QB on a HORRIBLE team.  He still could prove to be "pretty good" if given the right opportunity, but arent we all.  I think he could play QB for Titans and Fisher, a USC guy.  Palmer couldnt wear his #9 though, but #10 is available.  That would be cold huh?
