Was nepotism a factor in Fisher firing?

J. Fisher (US Presswire)Posted by Andy Benoit

There are any number of factors (Vince Young, Bud Adams namely) that contributed to Jeff Fisher's surprising dismissal from Tennessee (and subsequent decision not to coach in 2011).

Could one of them have also been nepotism?

That's what Paul Kuharsky of ESPN threw out there recently. Kuharsky points out that after Titans offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger was diagnosed with cancer last season, Fisher added his son, Brandon, to the staff as an offensive quality control assistant. Brandon Fisher essentially served a crash course apprenticeship under Heimerdinger.

After that little apprenticeship for Brandon Fisher, who played football at Montana, his father apparently wanted more.

A source told John Clayton that Jeff Fisher was looking to add Brandon Fisher to his 2011 staff as a quality control coach, and that turned out to be a breaking point for Bud Adams.

I can’t believe Jeff Fisher didn’t know it would be.

Nepotism has long been taboo for Adams, and it’s the primary reason Gregg Williams, who wanted to bring his son Blake along, didn’t rejoin the franchise as defensive coordinator after the 2008 season.

Kuharsky also believes that Fisher may have been looking to cash out while avoiding an ugly lame duck season in 2011.

Fisher said in his farewell press conference that there was some discussion about Brandon’s appointment to the staff but “that was not the issue”. Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, however, said he heard that it was a significant issue for Fisher.
