Report: Eagles will franchise tag Vick

It sounds like the Eagles know where they want their offense to go next season, and it sounds like they know who they want to lead them there.

Not surprisingly, that’d be QB Michael Vick. And to wrap him up for another season without having to commit a long-term contract to him, the Eagles will place the franchise tag on Vick, according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Vick, of course, was amazing for much of the season, supplanting Kevin Kolb as the official Donovan McNabb replacement and then leaving Kolb in a sticky situation (probably half the teams would use him as a starting quarterback, and unfortunately for him, the Eagles are not one of those teams).

But Schefter also writes Philadelphia will look to deal Kolb – who’s slated to make $1.4 million next year but also desperately wants to start. Considering the amount of interest Kolb should draw from other clubs, look for him not to be in an Eagles uniform next season.

I think it is safe to say the Eagles are going to do whatever it takes to keep Michael Vick in Philly. He's a very talented QB and seems to understand the errors of his ways. Don't get me wrong - killing innocent animals does not get a pass from me. He will always be marked for that but giving someone a second chance is the best way to handle most of these situations. I do think every professional sports team should have an assigned mentor for these young gifted athletes to provide guidance with life issues from finance to who you should avoid and what not to get mixed up in. some may disagree but many of the athletes come from a variety of home lifes that don't provide those things and a little guidance can avoid mistakes like Michael Vick's. I hope he does well and has a long, successful career in Philly.

I did not say he should play. Just do the obvious - show up, shut up and don't embrass the organization. For Crosby - the proof you need is the NHL program that broadcast on the Penguins and the Capitals with other players miked up. All you heard is Sidney whining about this call and that call. Don't get me wrong - he's a very gifted and talented player and I agree with you in that the NHL has shoved him down everyones throat. The sad part is that Sidney himself bought into the hype and that works against him. Here's the difference - you never heard Lemioux, Gretsky, Yzerman, Rocket Richard, Howe, Mikita or any other superstar concerned about personal awards but in every case the superstars of hockey were concerned about the team and winning games. They played for the team - unselfishly because they were comfortable and mature in who they were. They let others praise them. Their job was to provide leadership and help guide the team. The difference is in each case you have sighted it's about Crosby winning this or leading in goals and other personal achievements and nothing about the team. The team exists for Crosby not the other way around and that's ashame because he will never get the respect he should of NHL fans outside of Pittsburgh with the me first attitude. And please don't respond with some sort of personal snide attack on me, not that I care but - it makes less of your position and opinions. I know you love Sidney and support him and you should if your a Penguins fan but a more mature Sidney would give him alot more fan base.JMO

Kevin 92 my comments were not directed to wings fans just one in particular who started throwing insults for no reason.

Blitz first of all we all know that the Eagles arent going to just let him become a FA. Second I'm pretty sure that teams can and do trade pending FA's all the time. I'd be willing to bet there are plenty of teams willing to make that trade.

Since when do you need to have a contract to be traded? They own the rights to him dont they?

Sure they do, but why would a team give up the value for Vick just for his rights?  Vick could burn them and hit FA anyways, or that team would tag him.  Either way, he is going to make a lot money in 2011 (if there is an NFL season).  NO TEAM would make that trade.

You make some good points Kevin92, but your reasoning for not respecting Crosby is unfounded.  He expects privledged status?  How so?  When he came into the league, yah maybe he did then.  He cryed about everything.  Anyone will tell you that (himself included).  But since then?  He doesnt complain about calls anymore then any other NHL player.  You ever see Ovie get a call on him that he doesnt like?  He acts the same way as Crosby.  And please, he doesnt act like a leader???  He is exactly what a leader should be.  He is always one of the last one off the ice at practice, always practices hard, is always willing to spend time with the media, even when its a pain in the butt, never gives up on the play, always backchecks, is unselfish with the puck, always gives time to sign autographs, etc.  What else do you want from a leader?  Fiery rhetoric?  I would rather take the guy who leads by example, thanks.  You put any other name in the NHL on the back of his jersey, and people would say what a great leader he is.  But because he was admittedly shoved down everyone's throats when he came in the league, now everyone loves to hate him without really knowing anything.  If he was a redwing, you would love him.  If he was a Flyer, they would love him.
Maybe Crosby should have showed up?  You ever have a concussion Kevin 92?  Its not something you just forget about and go have fun.  You think Crosby wanted to miss the last couple of weeks?  This is a guy who was running away with the scoring title and penguins were on a roll.  I mean it took Booth a half season to return, it took Savard 6 months to return from a concussion and you are trying to begrudge Crosby a couple of weeks off after taking not one but two vicious hits to the head?  Come on, think about.  Redwings are a classy organization, you would think their fans would follow their example.
I dont usually defend crosby on these message boards because people either loves him or hates him, depending upon what team you cheer for and so its pretty pointless.  But Kevin you made these sweeping opinions without seeming to know anything about the pens, or at least did not substantiate your arguments at all with facts.  But if you can provide concrete examples of how he is not a leader, or expects privledged status, I am all ears.  (dont bother with the "he is a crybaby".  Something a little more specific please).

The Eagle should deal Vick while his value is high!!   Vick is got battered and was slowed with injuries as the eason wore on.  This will be the story every year with his playing style.

Vick had a great year..but now is the time to get something for him.

That would make a lot of sense.

However.  The Eagles still needed to do something to maintain the rights to his services.  If they don't tag him (or sign to new contract), they get absolutely nothing for him because he becomes a free agent.  So many comments on here complaining about the tag and saying how the Eagles should have traded him, yet very few realize no team would give up players or picks for a guy you could just flat out sign in free agency in a few weeks.

To all-pgh;                 No, the loss to the Penguins doesn't sting. Would Detroit like to have won? - sure but what the loss of the cup really means to the really progressive good teams is a way to identify area to improve upon. I am a Red Wings, Lions and Tiger fan - always have been. But I went to Pitt. and always liked the Steelers and the Penguins (minus Crosby) so as much as I respect the Pittsburgh teams I will be a fan of the Detroit teams without hating anyone. I don't respect Crosby because he expects privileged status and hasn't earned it over time like Gretsky, Yzerman, Howe, Lemiuex, Richard etc. However, he considers himself in that league but doesn't act like they do. He wears the "C" but doesn't act like a leader. You need to understand, professional sports is a business - not a video war game and try not to take it so seriously. If you think I'm off base look at the allstar game - mortal "enemies" playing a hockey game together on the same team no less and talking and laughing it up. Hmmmm, maybe Crosby should have showed up - he may learn something. And by the way - stop the hate campaign - no one wants to listen to it.
