The Cleveland Browns have spent weeks searching for a replacement for fired offensive coordinator Brain Daboll. Sounds like they’ve made their decision. The new OC? No one.

Many suspected that former University of Miami assistant Mark Whipple would get the OC job. But with Whipple being named Cleveland’s new quarterback coach, the thinking now is that offensive coordinator position could go unfilled.

This is not unprecedented. Todd Haley did not have an offensive coordinator his first year in Kansas City. Wade Phillips, a defensive guru, did not have a defensive coordinator during the latter half of his stint in Dallas.

The Browns’ first-time head coach Pat Shurmur, who served as the offensive in St. Louis under Steve Spagnuolo, is calling the plays either way. With that being known, few if any prominent offensive assistants will want what amounts to a low-level job.
