The news was inevitable, yet now that it’s here, it still feels big: Colts owner Jim Irsay announced (via his increasingly-entertaining Twitter account) that the team has slapped the franchise tag on Peyton Manning.

The guarantee price of the tag is a little over $23 million. The tag is simply an instrument to buy some more time...Manning and the front office will continue to negotiate a long-term contract.

Don't expect any slowdown in this story, though. The next question --- and more fascinating question -- is whether they'll try to complete a deal before the March 4 expiration of the CBA.

raven - What was lucky? Are you kidding? Any team that makes the playoffs has to have the stars line up to get that far, much less playing on a high note with all/most of their best players healthy during the playoff push. New Orleans is still a better team with a significantly better QB, they didn't get through the season in as good of shape as GB and came up short. GB was gifted a game with the Lions by the refs (or inexperienced reciever, depending on how you view it), without that game they don't even get in. Pittsburgh shows up to the SB without the most talented O-lineman in the NFL and a qb in a walking boot. So you're going to tell me the way was paved strictly on talent?? whatever...

buckeye - like I said before, GB (& Farve's back-up) just won a SB with the leagues number two defense, what year did the Colts have a top five defense?? You may have to go back to Baltimore to find one...and did you say Peyton doesn't have a strong arm??? Oh, I get it, Peyton had great recievers, all of which would have made Taverius Johnson an all-pro qb, how fortunate for Manning. I'm sure someone is spiking the Coke Zero for you to live in Indiana and say something that unbelievable, do you even watch the games? Not only can he throw the deep ball, he throws it as accurate as anyone.

Astromanic, what was lucky about Green Bay's playoff run?  They won 4 games on the road (including SB) and only trailed ONCE by a TD to Atlanta.  And they ended up winning that game by 27.

astromanic....first of all I am tax payer in Hendricks county here in Indiana and helped pay for Lucas Oil Stadium as taxes  paid for the stadium not the colts, they held central Indiana hostage and Irsay continues to do so as he reaps profits from concessions and events other than football held at the stadium.I stated Peyton throughout his career has been surrounded by great talent, not this season,up until this year he has had some great weapons,James,Harrision,Clark,Wayne,Saturday,Sanders,....I could keep going,do you get the point? If you read my post I said Peyton was and is  a great Q   I think it is very obvious that Rodgers is a better athlete,Manning runs like he is in quick sand and doesn't have a gun,I think you'll find that Manning has played with twice as many all pros than Favre did in his career in Green Bay....go ahead and check it out....and sorry to inform you I don't drink....just Coke Zero. The Colts lose players to free agency because they have over paid players like Sanders and can't afford to keep some players when their contracts expire. I don't believe in luck either,Green Bay played well and won the Super Bowl just as your Colts did several years ago. Good LUCK to you and your Colts.

buckeyezane, your two posts have to be the most uninformed nonsense I've read in years! Wow! I'm glad your team finally got out from under Bret's cloud, but busting on Manning isn't impressing anyone. Rodgers had a great year for a bottom first round qb, hopefully GB will not get their teamed shredded by free-agency & he can make another run, but it's not likely. They had a lucky run as a six seed and will probably get roughed up in what is becoming a very tough division. Enjoy the rush, your team now gets next year's toughest schedule with a big bulls-eye on their jerseys.
As for Peyton, name one other qb that had their running back and all but one reciever lost to injury and led them to the playoffs...with lower third in the league ranked defense. The Colts haven't had a top ranked defense in Manning's career, so exactly what talent are suggesting he's surrounded by. As I said great season, in 13 years, come back and tell me about Farve's back-up. As for being cash-strapped, did you notice they are playing in a new stadium and have as much cap room as any contender. Are you still drunk from the super bowl party?

Colts put franchise tag on Peyton Manning

Here is the story that I am hearing...Manning came to the table and stated that he "didn't want to break the bank!"  Manning was holding out for better team mates and wants a new OC (one who can get the plays into him in a timely manner).  He wanted Polian to go out on the Free Agent market and spend some money that he didn't want.  Polian told him to be a QB and not a coach and it pissed Peyton off!!!  the negotiations then became heated...highly heated.  Peyton then stated "OK...I will act like a player and demanded a trade!!!"  Polian needs to check his ego at the door and get him signed!  Peyton wants a stronger line and a new OC and will take less money...seems like those demands are not that hard!!!  Get it done and don't have the entire state of Indiana on you Polian!!!!!  Franchise tag was only option to cool both parties!
