Minnesota has franchise-tagged C. Greenway (US Presswire). Posted by Josh Katzowitz

The Vikings have announced they will franchise tag LB Chad Greenway, leaving the door open for others to court WR Sidney Rice and possibly sign him away.

Greenway is a good choice for Minnesota. He’s led the team in tackles the past three seasons (this year, he had a career-high 144 stops), and he’s played in 64-straight games. He’s durable and talented, and he’d be a good candidate for a long-term deal.

According to’s Jason La Canfora, the Vikings won’t use their transition tag on Rice either, and apparently they believe they can re-sign him on their own. You’ll recall last season that Rice missed 12 games after undergoing hip surgery, and when he returned, he produced pedestrian numbers (17 catches, 280 yards, two touchdowns in six games (five starts)).

But it was also pretty obvious that Rice wasn’t happy with his $550,000 salary for 2010, and it’s also clear Minnesota will have to pay him much more in order to keep him.

Of course, it’s not out of the realm of possibility another team swoops in and tries to sign Rice, but that’s the risk the Vikings are willing to take. Instead, they’ll tag Greenway and pay him about $10.2 million for 2011.

"Chad's an important part of our team and his play speaks for itself," Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said in a statement, via ESPN 1500. "He's productive and has continued to improve each year he has been in the NFL. He's a leader for us in the locker room and on the field."

I agree - Rice is gonna make his mark and become a playmaker. Linebackers are a dime a dozen. (and their salaries reflect that)

I like Greenway, but his skill set is much more common and easy to find as a linebacker. Rice can be a game changing player - a playmaker. The Vikes better do what's necessary to protect him.

Waesn`t it Bud Grant that said WRs are "a dime a dozen"? I sure wouldn`t waste a franchise, or transision tag on a player still recovering from surgery. Another thing Minnesota should do is get rid of ol` baldys XFL uniforms, and make their "throwback" uniforms permanent.

From what I can tell, it's one FAN ding the "boasin' and gloatin"(LOL), it's dangerous to ASS-U-ME we all feel this way!

I for one want them to stay in Minnesota, I live there, even a mediocre NFL team is huge for the economy. Prety tough to get a team back once you lose one.  Another reason I want them to stay is that it is the Packers' second biggest rivalry, HA HA!

As for the "cellar" comment acouple of years ago, check your facts, a solid 3rd place in the division (6 clear of Detroilet!). JK!

As for the actual story here, I think it's a good move for the Vike's, They know what they're geting w/ Greenway, too much unknown w/ Rice.....Did #4 make himin 2009, or did he make#4? Also need to see if the dude can stay healthy.

After a new CBA is engineered, there may not be any Franchise or transitional tags available to teams, so it's way too early to make assumptions about this sort of thing.

These both seem like good moves my the Vikes.  Greenway is tough and dourable well worth the money.  Rice has had what one great season and other than that is injury prone.  I am a Bears fan so I hope the Vikings over pay for Rice so he can sit on the sidelines for half of the games.  I personally don't think they will over pay for him, and will make him a modest offer with good insintives.  Maybe crazy Al Davis will offer him tons of money without insintives, but he is about the only one!
