Are the Dolphins CBs better than Revis/Cromartie?

Earlier this week, Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis had something interesting to say about his status in the league. After leading the team with 12 passes defended last year, Davis was ready to declare that he and Sean Smith are the top cornerback unit in the NFL.

"I'm going to go out on a limb and say we're the best tandem in the league," Davis told the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Wait, wait, wait. You can’t possibly mean that Davis and Smith are better than the Jets combo of Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie, right? After all, as the paper points out, Revis and Cromartie “have a combined 32 interceptions and four Pro Bowl berths to Davis' and Smith's five and none respectively.” Surely, Davis didn’t mean he and Smith are more productive than Revis and Cromartie. But no, Davis wouldn’t back down from his theory.

"You name them all and I'm putting it out there," he said.

When told about that hypothesis, Revis pointed to proof that, in his mind, made clear that Davis was incorrect.

"He's got to play a couple more years before he's saying all that," Revis said, via the New York Post. "They're a good tandem but they have a lot of work to do. … It really don't matter because the film don't lie. The film don't lie. You can say what you want to say. You can say the sky is red, but it ain't red. That's just what it is. We know how we play and we know what we do on that field not just as a corner tandem but as a secondary. We play great football."

And of course, Revis is probably right, particularly since Smith (pictured above) lost his starting job for a time last year to Jason Allen. But this season might provide a new challenger to Revis and Cromartie as the top tandem in the league. And it’s not Smith and Davis. Nope, it’s the Eagles trio of Asante Samuel, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Nnamdi Asomugha. That would be my answer if somebody asked me about the best cornerback unit in the league.

Obviously, it’s not time yet for Smith and Davis to acquire that title, but, as we learned last year, Smith and Davis are usually a little late to the party anyway.

Are the Dolphins CBs better than Revis/Cromartie?

@ Revis is pretty good? how can the best corner in the league just be "pretty good". And if Cromartie isnt in the top 20 then name me 20 better DB's....there are a handful of really good corners in the league Revis being at the top of the list and Cromartie comes right after those top guys

Revis is pretty good, but both Cromarties are overrated.  Not even in the Top 20.  Sean Smith was a rated as a Top 10 DB in the NFL last year.  He had way too many drops though.  Catch one or two of those INT's and he would have easily been in the Pro Bowl.

As an Eagles fan I have to take the Packers, then Jets, then, maybe, the Birds....I have not seen Asamugha enough yet to have a feel, but I can tell you that what I have seen from Asante these last few years makes me cringe.  Yes, he is one of the most exciting guys to watch in the backfield each and every year.  But for every pick he gets he seems to get burned, and badly, for the pick he went for and missed...and he plays so far off a guy that when he does go for a tackle it is hysterically poorly executed (and really, he doesn't actually try to tackle, he tries not to get hurt).

Now, to be fair to Samuel, now that he has some help on the other side, he may be better, because teams HAVE to go to his side more often, which means more opporunity to make that big play.  He has, for the past few years, been forced to play with broken guys (Hobbs), bad CBs (Patterson), Rookies (Lindley), or old guys (Sheldon Brown/Lito Shepard).  This is the first time he has had legitimate help on the other side, and most likely he will be playing against the #2 WR on the other team now.  So maybe he elevates his game.  But at this point, seeing what we have seen in the past, Packers, Jets, then Eagles.

Without a doubt we can put the Saint's Jabari Greer and Tracy Porter ahead of the Dolphins two corners.

Is this idiot serious!! If you asked me who the starting CB's were for the Dolphins before I read this stupid article I would have said "I have no idea". The Dolphins finished 7-9 and last year and missed the playoffs. Teams with mediocore corners finish with a better record than 7-9 and teams with the BEST CB tandems dont miss the playoffs!!! Vontae Davis needs to call Brandon Marshall's shrink and get his head examined!

This Dallas fan sez: Asomugha and Samuel are better than the Miami corners, or any other tandem, great as Revis is, and they're part of what make Eagles the favourites in the NFC East and, in my opinion, a contender to unseat the Fudge Pack in the conference.

If Cromartie played opposite a merely average CB, all you'd read about is his swinging member, and we see quite enough on that topic as it is, thank you very much.

Maybe you're all a bit dense considering in Philadlephia they have Asomugha, and Samuel.

@ozark, Hey sparky; why don't you ask ochocinco, brandon marshall, randy moss and andre johnson what they think? They all have been shut down by the best cb in the nfl.
