We seldom mention punters around here because, well, outside of Chris Kluwe, very few of them do anything noteworthy. Which brings us to Matt Turk, formerly of the Jaguars.

We've previously written about Jacksonville's abysmal special teams day against the Bengals Sunday, highlighted by two forgettable Turk punts, the last of which -- a 22-yarder -- played no small part in the Jags' fourth loss of the season.

And while head coach Jack Del Rio is still employed by the organization, Turk is not. The club released him Tuesday, Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times-Union reports. The team has signed Nick Harris to replace Turk.

Through five games, Turk's punts netted 32.8 yards, on average, good for 30th in the league. And Football Outsiders ranks the Jags' special teams 28th.

Against the Bengals, the Times Union's Vito Stellino writes that "The fans booed Turk for the second time in the game after the [22-yard] punt. They also booed after he punted 32 yards in the third quarter and as he left the field, he raised his hands as if he were taunting the fans to boo more."

Apparently, Turk had struggled with Jacksonville's directional style, something he hadn't done in more than a decade. He switched to rugby-style punting earlier this month though, clearly, it wasn't enough to save his job.

The Jaguars signed Turk to a one-year, $2 million deal during free agency, with $600,000 in guarantees after losing 2007 fourth-rounder Adam Podlesh to the Bears in July.

you had clicked on the link that made up the words "rugby style" punting (that is why those words were blue) you would have seen that "Rugby style punts are different in that the punter kicks the point of the football. They tend to bounce back toward the punter more rather than falling into the end zone." It is a real term. Google it for yourself and try using it in the future to get the facts before you comment.
@TimmObi, thanks for joining the boards to dispense such wisdom. Do me a favor, look up the word "sarcastic", and also try to read comments in the "context" that they were intended.  Rather than point out the error in the spelling of Rugby, I tried using "sarcasm" to point it out.

Great punter. Good decision by him to get himself out of a situation that is not beneficial to him. It should also be noted that any veteran's contract is gauranteed in full after participating in their first game. So the $600 thousand in guarantees part is irrelevant. By the CBA he is entitled to every penny of that 2 Million dollars.

This type of no research, fiscally irresponsible personnel decision making is why there's a good chance the Jaguars will have both Blaine Gabbert and Andrew Luck on their roster to begin the season in 2012.

Go Turk!
