DeSean Jackson wants to be paid like a top-5 WR

Jackson was shocked he was benched for missing a special-teams meeting. (US PRESSWIRE)

Maybe it was an attempt to distract us from the train wreck that has become the Eagles' 2011 season. Or maybe head coach Andy Reid thought so little of the Arizona Cardinals, last Sunday's opponent, that he didn't think Philly would need DeSean Jackson. Or maybe Reid really did bench Jackson to send him a message after he overslept for a special teams meeting.

Whatever the reason, the bottom line is that Jackson was caught off guard by the decision, and more than that, it's clear that the Eagles' most dynamic player, who happens to be in the last year of his rookie deal, wants a new contract. And that's really the underlying theme to all this.

In an interview that aired Sunday morning, Jackson spoke with NFL Network's Michael Irvin about the last seven days, as well as his future in Philly.

"Being late to a meeting is unacceptable, of course," Jackson said. "I understand that but I've never been a problem, never been a distraction."

Irvin asked Jackson if it was customary for a player to sit out a game for missing a team meeting. "I've never seen coach Reid do anything like that. I've never seen him bench anybody for missing a meeting. … But I'm one of the star players on this team so I'm held accountable more than others."

Jackson is making $600,000 this season and it's no secret that he'd like a new contract. There was some speculation that last week's benching could mean that the Eagles might be willing to let him walk in the offseason.

"Hopefully, (the benching) doesn't have too many (implications for a new contract). The punishment was what it was, I accepted it, me and coach Reid talked as men so I think that in his mind and my mind we're moving on."

So given that guys like Larry Fitzgerald average $15 million a season, and Calvin Johnson makes almost $9 million this season, what does DeSean Jackson think he's worth?

"I think right in that range," he said. "Maybe top-5 in the NFL. ...My playmaking skills and abilities, my punt returns, and the ability to get the ball and score on any play. I mean, Fitzgerald, he's a special receiver -- don't get me wrong -- but he doesn't play special teams so that adds an extra edge to it."

That's a fair point, but similar to Peyton Hillis' contract situation in Cleveland, Jackson could've gone about this differently.

"Showing up to any meeting late is definitely not a good way to handle (things) when you want money from a team," NFL Network's Marshall Faulk said Sunday morning.

And you really can't put it any simpler than that.

DeSean Jackson wants to be paid like a top-5 WR

Top 5 receivers don't run away from contact and short arm passes when they are afraid of being hit. They don't taunt opposing coaches and draw penalties that negate large gains. They make team meetings. They behave like proffesionals, not bratty little kids. He has the skills. If only he could grow up and start acting like a top 5 receiver.

DeSean Jackson wants to be paid like a top-5 WR

DeSean Jackson, despite his speed, is an immature and selfish player. He does not deserve the money a top 5 wideout gets nor should he be considered one.

DeSean Jackson wants to be paid like a top-5 WR

First of all Michael Vick and McCoy are their most dynamic players....that's not even for a writer you should have a better grasp of vocabulary....say he's the fastest maybe.....anyway....he's on crack if he thinks he's a top five WR......I wouldn't even think top 15.....just my opinion.....and he can play.....but not at the level he thinks....maybe I'm wrong

DeSean, I admire your talent and passion for the game, but you're immaturity is going to make teams(Eagles) leery about offering you a new contract with a hugh signing bonus. We as football fans can always count on you to do something stupid on the field. I know  you've hear the comparison to Allen Iverson and that's not  a good thing. It sounds as if you're getting bad advice and hanging with peeps that you have no buiness being with.

I will say that you're underpaid based upon previous years production, but no way are you a top 5 receiver.

Top 5 WR's DO NOT:
Miss meetings
Set balls on the ground short of the end zone
Make catches then flip a ball at an opposing coach costing your team 50+ yards

He is not even the best receiver on his own team (Maclin)
Here is a list of the best WR in the game right now:
1.  Calvin Johnson
2.  Andre Johnson
3.  Larry Fitzgerald
4.  Wes Welker
5.  Greg Jennings
6.  Mike Wallace
7.  Vincent Jackson
8.  Jordy Nelson
9.  Steve Smith
10. Hakeem Nicks
11. Dwayne Bowe
12. Jeremy Maclin
13. Roddy White
14. Marques Colston
15. Dez Bryant
16. Anquan Boldin
17. Brandon Marshall
18. Miles Austin

No one will pay him top 5 money. He is barely top 20. He is the 3rd best punt returner in the league at best (since he brought that up in his playmaking ability).

DeSean Jackson wants to be paid like a top-5 WR

The numbers don't lie. A key point in your comment in addition to the numbers is quit acting stupud. This kid is acting like a clown. Welker, Fitzgerald, Jennings even young Wallace are all good citizens of the league. For Andy to have to sit this kid for a game says so much about his character. We will have to wait and see if Jackson ever gets it. Another young Eagles WR Chris Carter had soem issues early, but once he figured it out he did pretty well.

DeSean Jackson wants to be paid like a top-5 WR

I think you guys don't watch many eagles games - desean is literally open and double covered on every deep route he takes. Hes the fastest WR in the game right now with maybe an exception of Tori Smith but desean has the better hands and agility to make plays. I promise you if Philly wont pay him 8+ million a year, someone will and it will be worth it. Comparing players numbers really isnt a good way to look at this situation - clearly, desean isnt getting the ball right now, not enough anyways - he was however given a chance vs the giants and clearly looked like the best player on the feild - (minus a taunting penalty that negated a huge play.) Over the past 2 seasons though he has ranked in the top 5 in yards after catch and avg yards per catch - those are the numbers that get you paid. I'm not supporting deseans missing of a meeting, though, I do understand his grief. Desean is very much under utilized and is a real special talent, calling him a joke is a little much. Before being benched people were wondering why D jax wasnt getting the ball so much - then the benching happend and everyone hates D jax now. I'm a jags fan - we really need a guy like this and I'd be happy to see him come to us.

DeSean Jackson wants to be paid like a top-5 WR

DeSean wants to be paid as a top receiver is truely a JOKE. I do agree that he is being underpaid this year … Steve Smith is getting payed multi-millions and He isn't. The Kid is dynamic … But this contract thing has really bothered him and you can see his performance has suffered. Right now if he doesn't start to play better he will be a mid range free agent salary player next year. If the Eagles don't franchise him.
